Animaniacs is ushering in its 27th anniversary and to celebrate, Hulu has released a first-look trailer that reveals the updated character art for the reboot.
Fans raised on the show can rest easy knowing that the original voice actors are once again returning to their respective, treasured characters. In a tweet back in 2019, the Animanicast podcast led by Rob Paulsen, the voice of Yakko and Pinky, revealed that he and the cast had been working on the reboot. Jess Harnell and Tress MacNeille are returning to play Wakko and Dot, respectively. Additionally, Maurice LaMarche is returning to his iconic character, the Brain. Besides these core characters, little is known about the other supporting characters returning for the reboot which is expected to launch on November 20, 2020. From the looks of it, Hulu seems to be maintaining the original, hand-drawn design of the characters while also showcasing updated visuals that appear to modernize the new show’s overall look. Essentially, there is just enough nostalgia for fans of the original series and a fresh look for those discovering Animaniacs for the first time.
Animaniacs, which originally ran from 1993-1998, was a variety show, with short skits featuring a large cast of characters. While the show had no set format, the majority of episodes were composed of three short mini-episodes, each starring a different set of characters, and bridging segments. Hallmarks of the series included its music, character catchphrases, and humor directed at an adult audience. The new series is part of Hulu’s expansion of cartoon classics in its existing library like Tiny Toon Adventures and the Animaniacs spinoff, Pinky and the Brain.
