Disney hopes to continue riding the high they will have all summer by releasing a strong October contender in MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL. The sequel to the 2014 hit will find Angelina Jolie returning to the title role as the winged, horned sorceress, and in the first trailer, she’s back wearing those flowing clowns, conjuring those nasty-looking spells and spreading those wings with a malicious sense of fun only Jolie can have.

More a teaser than a full trailer, there’s not much to the story tease other than to recall back to the first movie a bit and hinting that this Mistress of Evil has done something, well, evil. Elle Fanning is back as Aurora, and Michelle Pfeiffer joins the team as Queen Ingrith, who clearly thinks Maleficent is up to no good. The visuals look pretty great and Jolie seems in top form once again as the iconic SLEEPING BEAUTY baddie. Other than that, there’s not much to go on, so let’s just all enjoy Jolie owning the screen with whatever extravagant/evil costumes they're decking her out in.
The original movie, though not a critical darling, was a box office hit coming out towards the end of May 2014 (the same slot ALADDIN is this year), making $241 million domestically and $758 million around the world. While the beginning of October is a bit crowded with movies like JOKER, THE ADDAMS FAMILY and GEMINI MAN coming out, MALEFICENT 2 should be able to carve out its own place going into a rather uncompetitive end of the month to hopefully regain some of its predecessor’s early glory.

“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is a fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora. The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”
