Marvel's Eternals is one of the future MCU features I'm most looking forward to because of its top-notch cast and wanting to see what director Chloé Zhao will bring to the table in adapting this unique Marvel tale. One member of the ensemble cast is A-lister Angelina Jolie and I have to say I never suspected that the Oscar winner would be interested in dabbling in the MCU. During a recent chat with "Vogue," Jolie revealed what drew her to the cosmic comic book endeavor it had much to do with Marvel's desire to explore the way we see superheroes.
"I love this cast, and that we all came together. I signed up to support Chloé [Zhao]'s vision and Marvel's commitment to expand the way we see "superheroes". Running around in a gold bodysuit was not how I imagined my forties. But it's good crazy, I think."
Eternals will focus on a species of immortal aliens from a distant planet who arrived on Earth thousands of years ago and have been protecting humans since the dawn of time. The Eternals were created by Celestials, a race of powerful extraterrestrial beings who have secretly lived on Earth for over 7000 years. In order to protect Earth, The Eternals must reunite to protect humanity from their evil counterparts. Jolie plays Thena, a fierce warrior Eternal who has the ability to form any weapon out of cosmic energy, and, in all honesty, it feels like a role perfect for Jolie's commanding screen presence and sensibilities.
Angelina Jolie isn't the first to praise director Chloé Zhao's vision for the project. Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently described the filmmaker's pitch for the film as the best he's ever heard and he went on to say "Not Only does Chloé make remarkable, small, personal movies in a remarkable, small, personal way, but she thins in grand, cosmic gigantic terms, which fit perfectly with what we wanted to do. Eternals is a very big, sweeping, multimillenial-spanning story. And she just got it." Judging from that response, I feel like Eternals could be one of the more ambitious Marvel adaptations to date.
In addition to Angelina Jolie, Eternals also stars Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Gemma Chan, Barry Keoghan, and Kit Harrington. We had to wait a little longer for Eternals after Black Widow moved its first May release date in 2020 due to the pandemic and by the end of the release date shuffle, Eternals landed on November 5, 2021. Hopefully, the film will get to stay put this time because I'm really looking forward to it.
