As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken the world by storm for the past decade and shows no signs of slowing down, it's only inevitable that every actor who wants to will get the chance to appear in one. THR has reported that Angelina Jolie may potentially be making her Marvel debut as she's in talks to appear in THE ETERNALS, a film based on the Jack Kirby-created series which follows an evolutionary offshoot of humanity created as an experiment by the Celestials.
While not much is known about the film just yet, THR has heard that "one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans." There's no word on which role Angelina Jolie would play. Chloe Zhao (SONGS MY BROTHER TAUGHT ME is set to direct THE ETERNALS from a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. In the comics, the sage of The Eternals "began millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered and near-immortal beings and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants. The two races moved behind the scenes throughout human history while also engaging in Game of Thrones-style cosmic powerplays." Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige offered a small update on the project last month when he said that they will likely introduce the new characters GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY style, all at once.
Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.
Angelina Jolie will next be seen in MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL on October 18, 2019, while Marvel's next big film, AVENGERS: ENDGAME, will hit theaters on April 26, 2019.
