John Carter’s Andrew Stanton to direct epic sci-fi drama In the Blink of an Eye

Andrew Stanton, In the Blink of an Eye, John Carter

After directing Finding Nemo and WALL-E, Andrew Stanton turned his attention to the realm of live-action with John Carter. The film became one of the biggest box-office bombs in history, leading Disney to scrap the planned sequels. In the decade since its release, Andrew Stanton has largely stayed away from live-action movies, but THR reports that he’s set to return with In the Blink of an Eye for Searchlight Pictures.

In the Blink of an Eye is being described as an epic sci-fi drama, which will “explore no less than the entire history of the world and tackle the nature of life, love, hope and connection, doing so by focusing on three intersecting storylines.” Ambitious. THR says that 2001: A Space Odyssey, Interstellar, and Magnolia are the watchwords for the project. Following the release of John Carter, Andrew Stanton has directed episodes of Stranger Things, Better Call Saul, Legion, Tales from the Loop, and For All Mankind.

The script by Colby Day was featured on the 2017 Black List. Day’s next project is Netflix’s adaptation of Jaroslav Kalfar’s Spaceman of Bohemia starring Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan. The film follows “an astronaut (Sandler) sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect mysterious ancient dust. He soon finds his earthly life falling to pieces and he turns to the only voice who can help him try to put it back together. It just so happens to belong to a creature from the beginning of time lurking in the shadows of his ship.

As someone who never thought that John Carter was all that bad, I’m excited to see what Andrew Stanton has in the works for In the Blink of an Eye.
