Andrew Garfield wants to take a break from acting after Under the Banner of Heaven

Andrew Garfield, Spider-Man

It’s been a busy year for Andrew Garfield. The actor starred alongside Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, played famed playwright Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… Boom! (which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor), and reprised his role of Spider-Man for Spider-Man: No Way Home. He also stars in Under the Banner of Heaven, FX’s upcoming limited series in which he plays a Morman detective investigating a brutal murder.

While speaking with Variety, Andrew Garfield said that after a year of nonstop work, it’s time to take a break.

I’m going to rest for a little bit. I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for a while. Because as you know, that is a washing machine, that awards season. I need to just be a bit ordinary for a while.

Everyone needs to take a break now and again. Although we may not see Andrew Garfield on our screens while he takes some time to himself, we do have Under the Banner of Heaven to look forward to. Written by Dustin Lance Black (Milk) and directed by David MacKenzie (Hell or High Water), the series finds Garfield playing Pyre, an LDS elder who is committed to his Church and family but who begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer. The brutal murder also seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government. As the subject matter wasn’t exactly the lightest, Garfield said that the cast made it a necessity to have game nights, hikes, and things of that nature. “We had to keep on taking care of ourselves so that we can take care of the story,” Garfield said.

Under the Banner of Heaven will debut on FX tomorrow and you can check out a review from our own Alex Maidy right here.
