A few months ago we learned that Everardo Gout will be directing the next installment in the THE PURGE franchise, working from a screenplay written by franchise creator James DeMonaco. DeMonaco has written every PURGE film and directed the first three before handing the fourth film, THE FIRST PURGE, over to Gerard McMurray.
There's no word on the story the fifth PURGE film will be telling, but The Hollywood Reporter has heard that
it does take Purge out of its usual metropolitan setting while still dealing with class and race issues in the way the previous films have.
THR has also learned who will be starring in the film, and the two lead roles are both being taken on by actors from Mexico.
The female lead is Ana de la Reguera, whose previous credits include NACHO LIBRE, COP OUT, Eastbound & Down, COWBOYS & ALIENS, JESSABELLE, Narcos, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, and Twin Peaks. She recently completed work on Zack Snyder's upcoming Netflix zombie film ARMY OF THE DEAD.
The male lead is Tenoch Huerta, who was recently seen in TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID and Narcos: Mexico. Huerta also had the honor of appearing in a James Bond film, but unfortunately not in a prominent role. He was "Mexican Man in Lift" in 2015's SPECTRE.
No details on the characters have been revealed.
I have been entertained, to varying degrees, by most of what the PURGE franchise has had to offer up to this point (I haven't watched the TV show yet), so I'm on board to watch a fifth movie.
THE PURGE 5, or whatever it ends up being called, is heading toward a July 10, 2020 theatrical release. That happens to be the same date GHOSTBUSTERS 2020 is sitting on, so they might want to rethink that.
