After singing to a flock of animated birds in 2007's ENCHANTED, Amy Adams is ready to belt out another song or two for Universal's film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. According to Deadline, the story follows Hansen, a high schooler with social anxiety. He unintentionally gets caught up in a lie after the family of a classmate who committed suicide mistakes one of Hansen’s letters for their son’s suicide note. Adams will play Cynthia Murphy in the upcoming adaptation, the mother to the classmate that commits suicide.
To assure that Universal's version is true to form, Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for the stage musical, will write the screenplay. Also on board to add to the project's authenticity are Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote the music and came up with the original lyrics for the musical and film. Stephen Chbosky, who helmed both THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and 2017's WONDER, will direct.
While I've never heard of Dear Evan Hansen, I must say that the plot sounds like a unique one to bring to the Broadway stage. I wonder what kind of tone the production carries? I suppose I'll just have to wait and see, or perhaps I'll do a bit of research on the old Googleizer. Either way, it sounds as if Chbosky's latest effort is coming together, and that certainly is encouraging news.
