Director Tom Ford is eyeing several great actors for his A SINGLE MAN follow-up. According to Variety, Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal are in talks for leading roles in NOCTURNAL ANIMALS, an adaptation of the 1993 Austin Wright novel Tony and Susan. George Clooney is producing the thriller through his Smokehouse banner, and THR is also reporting that Joaquin Phoenix and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are being considered for leading roles as well.
The plot for NOCTURNAL ANIMALS is being described as a "story inside a story," which makes a lot of sense after reading the synopsis for Austin Wright's book.
Fifteen years ago, Susan Morrow left her first husband Edward Sheffield, an unpublished writer. Now, she's enduring middle class suburbia as a doctor's wife, when out of the blue she receives a package containing the manuscript of her ex-husband's first novel. He writes asking her to read the book; she was always his best critic, he says.
As Susan reads, she is drawn into the fictional life of Tony Hastings, a math professor driving his family to their summer house in Maine. And as we read with her, we too become lost in Sheffield's thriller. As the Hastings' ordinary, civilized lives are disastrously, violently sent off course, Susan is plunged back into the past, forced to confront the darkness that inhabits her, and driven to name the fear that gnaws at her future and will change her life.
I thought Tom Ford's A SINGLE MAN was fantastic, and NOCTURNAL ANIMALS sounds like a very good fit for the director. Have any of you read Wright's novel, and what are your thoughts on Ford being behind the camera for the adaptation?
Jake Gyllenhaal's boxing drama SOUTHPAW opens on July 31, 2015, and Amy Adams can be seen next in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE on March 25, 2016.
