FX has officially given the greenlight to a series set in the world of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's 2015 mockumentary WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. While the film focused on a group of vampires residing in New Zealand, the FX series – which was created by Clement and Waititi – will be set in New York City.
Starring Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, Doug Jones, Beanie Feldstein, Jake McDorman, and Mark Proksch, the show
follows three vampires who have been roommates for hundreds and hundreds of years.
Waititi directed the pilot from a script by Clement. They are also executive producing the series with Scott Rudin, Paul Simms, Garrett Basch, and Eli Bush.
Nick Grad, co-president of original programming at FX, had this to say:
WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS only gets better with age thanks to this brilliant adaptation for television by co-creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Their feature version was a hilarious, fresh take on the mundanity of everyday life that even immortals must face. We are thankful to them, Paul Simms and Scott Rudin, and this amazing cast for taking us deeper into the shadows with this series."
Clement and Waititi are also working on a WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS spin-off called Wellington Paranormal for New Zealand TV, and plan to make a feature follow-up called WE'RE WOLVES.
The FX What We Do in the Shadows will debut sometime in the spring of 2019. FX has ordered ten half-hour episodes.
The movie was fun, so hopefully the America-based characters of the series will be as entertaining as their New Zealand counterparts.
