Yes, you read that headline right. With a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN) and lyrics by "Barely Breathing" crooner Duncan Sheik, AMERICAN PSYCHO is headed to the Broadway stage. The show will star Benjamin Walker (ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER) and will premiere in a yet-unnamed Shubert theater this winter, with previews starting February 19, 2016.
AMERICAN PSYCHO isn't the only horror property to get the musical treatment, but it's certainly one of the most unexpected. Evil Dead and Re-Animator both lend themselves to the genre by being campy gore-fests that already feature elements of fun. Carrie… Well, Carrie was a notorious flop, but it has a ready-made teen cast and plenty of over-the-top performances.
American Psycho certainly has the dark comedy elements going for it, but the tale of yuppie serial killer Patrick Bateman (based on Bret Easton Ellis' novel of the same name) is going to be a hell of a time to adapt. One can only hope that the theater invests in a grade A cleaning crew, because stage blood does not come off easy.
