Disney has revealed the first official TV spot for the upcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese, airing it during Sunday night’s Academy Awards as some of its cast reaped some major gold.
In the 30-second spot, various voiceovers warn, “Dark forces will be coming”, “The gate between earth and heaven is opening” and “The fate of your world hangs in the balance.” Backed with promising-looking action and visual effects American Born Chinese looks to be a solid addition to the streaming service.
The official plot, as per Disney: “Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.”
American Born Chinese features a pretty stacked cast, with Everything Everywhere All at Once stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan the most recognizable stars (another co-star, Stephanie Hsu, is listed as a guest star). Other cast members include Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Jimmy Liu, and Sydney Taylor. Kelvin Yu, who served as executive producer on the animated series Central Park (Apple TV+) and Bob’s Burgers (Fox), created the series. Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed the MCU entry Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and is set to direct 2025’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, will direct.
Cretton was announced as director for American Born Chinese back in 2021. At the time, he said, “Reading Kelvin’s riveting adaptation of Gene’s incredible novel had me laughing and crying and jumping out of my chair on every page…I feel deeply connected to the characters in this story and the brilliant team bringing it to life. This show is going to be unlike anything we’ve experienced on TV, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we’re cooking up.”
American Born Chinese comes to Disney+ on May 24th.
