The launch of the second season of The Boys earlier this month became the most-watched global debut of an Amazon Original series ever, and you know what that means – spin-off! The Boys takes place in an America where the planet's superheroes have been morally corrupted by their celebrity status and often take advantage of their powers in reckless displays of behavior which threaten the safety of the world. Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) runs a group of vigilantes known as The Boys, who do what they can to keep watch over the superheroes, and, if need be, eliminate them.
According to Deadline, The Boys spin-off has been in the works for a while, but has now been fast-tracked due to the great success of the original series. Set to be scripted by The Boys executive producer Craig Rosenberg, the spin-off will be set at America's only college for young adult superheroes, which happens to be run by Vought International, and has been described as "an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. Part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys." So if superheroes behaving badly is your thing but you're wanted more of a frat-party vibe, you're in luck.
In addition to the spin-off, a third season of The Boys is on the way as well that will find series developer Eric Kripke reuniting with Supernatural star Jensen Ackles. The actor is set to play Soldier Boy, a World War II veteran who becomes one of the first superhero celebrities. "When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment,” Kripke joked in a statement. “I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of ‘Supernatural’ to ‘The Boys.’”
