Word has come down the wire that Amazon Studios has set an all-star cast for their upcoming comedy anthology series titled MODERN LOVE. Based on the New York TImes column and weekly podcast, the star-studded cast includes Anne Hathaway (OCEAN'S EIGHT, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) Tina Fey (DATE NIGHT, 30 ROCK), John Slattery(MAD MEN, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR), Dev Patel (LION, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE), Catherine Keener (DEATH TO SMOOCHY, INCREDIBLES 2), Andy Garcia(THE GODFATHER: PART III, GEOSTORM), Cristin Milioti (THE WOLF OF WALL STREET THE BRASS TEAPOT), Brandon Victor Dixon (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, THE GOOD WIFE), Olivia Cooke (READY PLAYER ONE, OUIJA), Andrew Scott (PRIDE, SPECTRE), Julia Garner (WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, ELECTRIK CHILDREN), Shea Whigham (TAKE SHELTER, AMERICAN HUSTLE), Gary Carr (BOLDEN, THE DEUCE), Sofia Boutella (ATOMIC BLONDE, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE), and John Gallagher, Jr. (10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, HUSH).
As if that onslaught of noteworthy actors isn't enough to pique your interest, it's been confirmed that SHAMELESS alumna Emmy Rossum will direct an episode of the series. Also joining her as directors for the project are Sharon Horgan (CATASTROPHE, GAME NIGHT) and Tom Hall. According to reports, Horgan will helm the Tina Fey and John Slattery led episode, which she also wrote. Meanwhile, Hall will direct an episode which he also wrote, with Rossum set as the woman behind the camera for an episode written by the late Audrey Wells. Furthermore, John Carney will serve as a writer, director, executive producer, and showrunner for MODERN LOVE. In regard to plot, the series is expected to focus on a myriad of complicated and awe-inspiring concepts of love.
“It’s like I woke up in the actor candy store,” said Carney. “We’ve managed to assemble a dream cast of my favorite actors. It’s a testament to the reach of the original column and of how, now more than ever, love is the only certainty.”
Serving as an executive producer alongside Carney is Todd Hoffman, with Trish Hoffman stepping onto the scene as a producer. Joining the project are The New York Times own Sam Dolnick and Choire Sicha, who will act as executive producers on the anthology for Amazon. Lastly, "Modern Love" column editor will come aboard as a consulting producer.
Wow. This project has quite the star power behind it, eh? Are we looking at a modern day LOVE ACTUALLY, here? Could this series have Amazon subscribers swooning for reunions, missed opportunities, and first kisses? I suppose we'll find out when MODERN LOVE makes its debut, sometime down the road.
