Andrew Garfield and Marc Webb are going to be done with Peter Parker after third film in the franchise. After Tobey Maguire left Sam Raimi‘s trilogy, the entire franchise was rebooted, but Sony is expanding their series with spin-offs including THE SINISTER SIX and VENOM, which means another reboot in out of the question. Garfield recently suggested that Ultimate Spider-man character Miles Morales could be introduced to the big screen films to take over for Peter Parker which was met with a lot of disdain from fans of the webslinger.
Now we know for certain that Morales or any other Spider-man variant will not be introduced in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN cinematic universe. Speaking with IndieWire about THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and beyond, producers Avi Arad and Ben Tolmach gave a definitive no to seeing anyone but Peter Parker as Spider-man. Arad further explained why.
No. The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.
Tolmach went on to say if they are ever replaced as the decision-makers on the franchise, that could change, but for now they emphatically say Peter Parker is Spider-man. They also go on to say the spin-offs will converge with the main franchise at some point which to me sounds like some sort of AVENGERS-style mega-movie. How that would work out remains to be seen. But, for now, Peter Parker fans can rest easy.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 opens tomorrow, May 2nd.
