Alright, alright! Matthew McConaughey offered the lead in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar

Christopher Nolan‘s INTERSTELLAR is moving quickly after announcing a release date late next year. With a script in place, the next step is to find a leading man and Nolan seems to be going with someone he has not worked with before. Deadline is reporting that an offer has been made to Matthew McConaughey for the starring role.

INTERSTELLAR’s plot “involves time travel and alternate dimensions in a story that sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.” While McConaughey has not worked in the science fiction genre often, he did play a role in another film based on theories from an influential scientist, Carl Sagan‘s CONTACT. McConaughey had been drowning in mediocre romantic comedies until this past year when he had a string of critical hits like KILLER JOE, BERNIE, and THE LINCOLN LAWYER as well as the box office success MAGIC MIKE. He is poised to continue his dramatic run with Martin Scorsese‘s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and his physically transformative turn in DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB.

I am a Nolan fan and I trust his vision for INTERSTELLAR will be unique and visually breathtaking. McConaughey is an interesting choice for the lead, but it is one I can get behind. I hope he accepts and that we get some more casting news soon.

INTERSTELLAR is slated to open on November 7, 2014.
