There are a handful of Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows in development for the Disney+ streaming service, one of which is She-Hulk. In the comics, Jennifer Walters was a young woman who received an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin, who just so happens to be Bruce Banner. As a result of this transfusion of radioactive blood, Jennifer found that she could transform into a large, powerful green-skinned version of herself, but unlike her cousin, she's able to retain much of her intelligence and emotional control.
Earlier this year, rumours began to swirl that Marvel Studios was looking for an "Alison Brie-type" to play the leading role, which led many to say, "why not just get Alison Brie?" While speaking with THR about her recently released film THE RENTAL, Alison Brie commented on those She-Hulk rumours which still persist.
You know, I've been trying to follow it online a little bit, and there don't seem to be. But it is always funny to me when something kind of takes off on the internet, and I'm getting my updates from fans tagging me in things on Instagram. I'm like, "Oh, interesting. Oh, people are still talking about it. That's cool." (Laughs.)
With COVID-19 keeping the majority of productions from shooting, we're likely a long way off from seeing She-Hulk on screen, but work is being done behind-the-scenes as Jessica Gao, who won an emmy for her work on Rick & Morty's "Pickle Rick" episode, is developing and leading the writing team for She-Hulk.
Speaking of delays, we may have a big one ahead of us in the terms of GLOW, Alison Brie's comedy drama Netflix series which deals with the 1980s syndicated women's professional wrestling circuit. The series was renewed for a fourth and final season last year, but production has obviously been put on hold owing to COVID-19. Given the highly physical nature of GLOW, Alison Brie believes that it might take even longer for a show like GLOW to get back into full-swing.
Sadly, I think it's going to mean a longer hiatus for our show than probably some other shows that might be able to get back to work sooner and maintain a safe environment. Especially because it's the final season and we already know that, there's a sense of wanting to preserve what the show is. And at its heart, it's a wrestling show. It's a really physical show. It's the main driving force of these characters and how they've found themselves is through wrestling and through this close contact with one another — with one another's bodies, specifically. So, if we tried to really change that, it would feel like a different show. I think it's going to be more about rapid testing and seeing if we can just monitor everybody's health to make sure that actors can be in close proximity to one another.
THE RENTAL is now available on VOD, and you can check out a review of the film from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
