Once Alicia Vikander finishes raiding tombs for Roar Uthaug (THE WAVE), it seems that she may stay underground to hunt monsters for Ben Wheatley (HIGH RISE). Deadline reports that Vikander is in talks to star in Wheatley's latest, a "cops vs. monsters" action-thriller by the name of FREAKSHIFT.
The project was first announced almost five years ago and takes place in a world where "creatures rise from the ground and terrorize citizens when night falls." The titular Freakshift is a band of government-organized misfits and lawbreakers who hunt and kill the creatures for "civic duty, sport and money." Should Vikander officially sign on, Deadline says that she will play the lead female protagonist. Production on FREAKSHIFT is expected to get underway this summer, which won't be too long after Alicia Vikander wraps up work on TOMB RAIDER.
Speaking of TOMB RAIDER, the upcoming adaptation of the popular video-game series is currently shooting and will find Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) setting out on her first expedition to finish her father's research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name. TOMB RAIDER also stars Dominic West as Richard Croft, Lara's father, Daniel Wu as Lu Ren, a ship captain who partners with Croft on a quest to find her father, and the great Walton Goggins as the "very complicated" villain. There have been several recent video-game movies which we had hoped would break the so called video-game movie curse, WARCRAFT and ASSASSIN'S CREED, but perhaps TOMB RAIDER will be the one to take home the gold ribbon.
TOMB RAIDER is set to hit theaters on March 16, 2018, while Ben Wheatley's next, FREE FIRE, is slated to be released in the U.K. on March 31st and in the U.S. on April 21, 2017.
