Video game movies don’t have the best reputation, but each time one shows up on the horizon we hope it’s the one to buck the trend. This is the reason why the upcoming TOMB RAIDER film has a lot of expectations to meet, and if this new image of Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft proves anything it’s that the Oscar-winner is up to the challenge. She’s got her bow and she’s got her tank-top that makes her aerodynamic when she fights; that’s all she needs.
Take a look!
The new version of the movie is inspired by the more recent run of video games featuring a more realistic Croft, which depart from the earlier ones in the series featuring a buxom character in impossibly short shorts. In the movie, we will find Croft working as a bicycle courier in London who goes on a mission to track down her missing father, a famous archaeologist. Vikander says in the new issue of Empire that they wanted to bring the character from the games to life while also making her feel like a modern woman:
We asked, “What are the famous traits of this person?” How can we demonstrate them in the story, but make her feel like a young woman in 2018?
The new TOMB RAIDER games are pretty fantastic, clearly taking a nod from the UNCHARTED games while delivering a tougher, more complex Croft, who is put in more violent scenarios. Hopefully, the movie can capture that tone and deliver a rousing adventure that isn’t trying to appease gamer fans but is trying only to be a good movie. Vikander certainly looks the part and, if I may say, sort of makes Katniss look like a punk.
TOMB RAIDER with Vikander, Walton Goggins, Dominic West and more hits March 18, 2018.
