Two weeks ago we shared the news that Alex Kurtzman (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK) and screenwriter Chris Morgan (FAST & FURIOUS franchise) had some meetings to “put together an interconnected slate of Monster films," including Dracula, the Wolfman and now the first one up being THE MUMMY. It now appears that Kurtzman will direct their first monster movie himself, the film previously had Len Wiseman (UNDERWORLD) and Andres Muschietti (MAMA) attached. This will be Kurtzman’s first project since parting ways with writing partner Roberto Orci.
THE MUMMY will take place in the present day and is described as an "an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements”. It will also feature new characters and not rehash previous incarnations; so nothing to worry about if you treasure the previous Mummy films. The Mummy will set the stage for the Universal Monsters franchise, This will be Kurtzman’s second directorial effort after the forgettable PEOPLE LIKE US; Kurtzman was also attached to direct VENOM for Sony but with the lukewarm reception THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 received, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 being pushed to 2018, and now THE MUMMY to deal with, VENOM is undoubtedly going back on the shelf.
THE MUMMY is scheduled to be released on April 22, 2016.
Are you looking forward to revisiting all the classic Universal monsters?
