We have some new details regarding the upcoming Venom spinoff which we last heard was titled VENOM CARNAGE. Writer/director Alex Kurtzman has shared some insight into the tone of the project; we still don’t know what iteration of the character the film will follow. We know that besides Perter Parker, Eddie Brock was the first to wear the alien symbiote; in 2011, Marvel Comics rebooted the character with Flash Thompson. Either way, it sounds like Kurtzman is going dark with his one.
Speaking with MTV, he touched on the possibilities of a darker movie:
"The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can't do with Spider-Man… Venom is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He's a much darker character."
He’s not currently involved with AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3, but Kurtzman has some advice on how the franchise could continue:
“I think as long as it keeps staying true to character, and true to who Peter is, and putting him in interesting and complicated situations, it’ll survive, because it’s so beloved – everybody loves Spider-Man.”
It's interesting to watch Sony try and build their own universe around Spider-Man; and they didn’t wait long at all considering the first sequel of the rebooted franchise was all about SINISTER SIX. They want to bring this anti-hero to the screen and have it be a darker experience? I’m all for that; I’ll just believe it when I see it. There’s a lot of money to be made with kid-friendly superhero movies, and they all know this; money talks, toys and other marketable items scream.
There is no release date for the Venom movie but as always, we will keep you posted.
