Just about every young actor in Hollywood auditioned for the role of young Han Solo in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's upcoming STAR WARS spin-off, and now it looks as though they have their man. First reported by Page Six and then confirmed by the major trades, it looks like Alden Ehrenreich, who was reported to be the frontrunner for the role several weeks back, has come out on top and it's said that he's negotiating to seal the deal right now.
I haven't seen Ehrenreich in all that much in so I can't really comment on his abilities as an actor, but I'm very pleased that they went with a relatively unknown actor rather than one with a bit more history behind him. Alden Ehrenreich has appeared in STOKER and BEAUTIFUL CREATURES among other films, but he's probably most well known for his recent role in the Coen brothers HAIL, CAESAR!, in which he played Hobie Doyle, a cowboy actor miscast in a period film. Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor were also being seriously considered for the Han Solo role several weeks back, but now that Alden Ehrenreich's casting is official, it seems that he's the lucky one who gets the tough job of stepping into a role played so perfectly by Harrison Ford.
The Han Solo-centric STAR WARS spin-off is set for a May 25, 2018 release and although we don't know much about the film at this point, we do know that it will take place before Solo's adventures with the Rebels and that Chewbacca will also be featured in a key role. The Wrap even says that Solo may wind up crossing paths with a young bounty hunter by the name of Boba Fett.
