Live a slasher! We visit The Great Horror Campout!

It may not be Halloween, but it is beginning to feel like it here in Los Angeles. If you are a horror fan, there is an event this summer that is likely to be one of the most thrilling answers to a horror hounds prayer this side of actually transporting yourself into a FRIDAY THE 13th flick. Imagine digging through bloody road kill or having to hunt down a human head or experience a shockingly horrific voodoo ritual. How about sleeping safely in your tent only to have some sort of madman literally drag you out into the dark and toss you into a van, only to find yourself stuffed inside the trunk of a car? Not only can this happen to you this coming weekend, but you can experience it all safely and live to tell about it.

From the creative minds behind the wonderfully wicked Los Angeles Halloween attraction Haunted Hayride, Ten Thirty One Productions will let you live your deepest, darkest fears at The Great Horror Campout . ! On June 7th and 8th you will have the opportunity to witness a horror themed attraction like no other. You can spend twelve straight hours of terror as you camp out with other victims facing demented demons, ones you’ve only dreamed about. Unlike most haunted house attractions where no touching is allowed, you will be gleefully tormented at this camp. Depending on the intensity that you are willing to experience, you are likely to be bound, chained and experience simulated torture! However, if you’d just like to spend a spooky evening in the woods with all-night horror flicks such as SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2: UNHAPPY CAMPERS, you can certainly do that as well. The level of thrills is all up to you!

Recently we at AITH were invited to get a secret look into this living nightmare. A small group of us were asked to meet at Griffith Park and board a bus that would take us to the private warehouse of Ten Thirty One Productions. Once we boarded, we were all caught up in conversation about our beloved genre. Then, while at a stop sign, three masked men began to bang on the windows and board the bus. They placed bags on our heads and we were informed that they were taking over. At one point one of the men grabbed me and placed me in another seat. While there, another one of these masked marauders put his arm around me and asked if I was having a good time. When I said yes, he leaned in uncomfortably close and said that they were going to have a good time as well, in a not so soothing way. Yes, this was all an act, but it sure as hell was an experience I’ll never forget.

Once we arrived at the super-secret location, we were given a look at some of the thrills and chills that campers had in store. This included food from the mess hall, such as sausage, mac and cheese, salad, plus a few trays that didn’t look altogether appetizing (thankfully, the real food is NOT of the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE variety). Among those in attendance were a couple of impressive creatures including the Jersey Devil and The Mothman, complete with his cocoon – both will be featured at this mind-blowing event! Yet as far as things that go bump in the night, there are bound to be a number of other creatures haunting the willing campers. This includes around one hundred actors who are getting ready to terrorize folks this coming weekend.

One of the highlights at this year’s campout is sure to be the Hell Hunt where you have to search for a series of gruesome artifacts. This includes the previously mentioned “human head” as well as breaking a poor soul’s finger in order to make it easier to cut off. During our visit, we had the opportunity to get an early start at the games by reaching inside a corpse in order to break off one of her ribs and pull it out. The ick factor is pretty outrageous especially since it was damn near impossible to get the gore off of my hand after the fact. Now to be fair, we only had a taste of the terror that will unfold, the real deal is sure to be the stuff that nightmares are made of. Yet everyone involved in the festivities has been carefully trained to terrorize as safely as possible. In other words, nobody will be hurt by the event… Traumatized maybe, but never physically hurt.

The official slogan promises that “Only the Dawning Sun Will Save You”, and believe me, you may actually wonder if you will survive the night. This unique scary night of fun is a must for horror fans looking for a truly terrifying adventure. Whether you are going to participate in the Hell Hunt – where the remaining survivor will win a “Golden Ticket” to the LA Haunted Hayride good for unlimited rides during the 2013 Halloween season – or simply want to watch movies and roast marshmallows in a spooky atmosphere, this may be the horror event of the year!

According to the official press release, “Campers will report to the Great Horror Campout, Base Camp at 8pm where they will meet the Camp Headmaster for the first time, receive dinner, tent assignments, Hell Hunt Bags and more.”
