Creator Ryan Murphy broke this news on his Instagram page a few weeks ago but now it's official: FX is moving forward with a spinoff of its popular anthology series American Horror Story called American Horror Stories. FX revealed the news as a part of its original programming slate through 2021.
The spinoff will be a weekly hourlong anthology series that will showcase a different horror story in each contained episode. Unlike the parent series which follows one narrative thread for the whole season, the spinoff will allow the creators to explore many different stories during a single season. Although no casting info has been officially revealed, Murphy's Instagram post about the spinoff earlier this month featured a screengrab from a zoom call that included American Horror Story MVP's such as Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett to name a few. It would come as no surprise if any of these names made an appearance on the series.
Like all productions in the States, American Horror Story season 10 is on hold as they await the word to return the work in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also in limbo at FX is Murphy's upcoming third installment of spinoff anthology series American Crime Story, entitled Impeachment: American Crime Story, which will focus on the Monica Lewinsky scandal. American Horror Story has already been renewed through season 13 and a start on production for the spinoff is unknown as of this writing.
I'm a bit torn on this one. American Horror Story is very hit or miss and while this self-contained spinoff sounds interesting, it also sounds like it will be a bit too much from the brand. I'm just hoping the already inconsistent tone of the parent series won't suffer because attention now has to be given to the new spinoff.
