Agent Coulson will not appear in Age of Ultron but likely will in Avengers 3

When we interviewed Clark Gregg regarding his directorial effort TRUST ME, the man who is Agent Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the ABC series AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. indicated he didn’t know whether he would be in Joss Whedon‘s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON or not. To this point, it still remains a mystery whether the plucky fan favorite would make his presence known to the super hero squad that thinks he is dead. According to one source, they will not find out next summer.

Total Film features an AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON story in their latest issue that claims the Avengers will not find out that Coulson is now the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. following the events of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and the first season of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. With the team facing the threat of Ultron, it is unknown to what extent S.H.I.E.L.D. business will be addressed, but this also will allow for Coulson’s story to be developed for more seasons on the small screen as AVENGERS 3 is not slated to hit theaters until 2018 at the earliest.

While Coulson is popular with audiences, resolving his story too quickly limits TV prospects. Plus, fans of the show know the connections being made to the Kree which would fit much better with the assumed Thanos showdown coming in the third film in the franchise. But, you never know, a cameo could still happen.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits theaters May 1, 2015.
