Bibidi-Bobbidi-Boo, Marvel Studios is conjuring another series for you. The superhero-centric studio announced today that it’s developing an Agatha Harkness spinoff series for Disney+. The would-be series would revolve around Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness, the all-powerful witch that terrorized Wanda and her family in the Emmy-winning series. Sources also indicate that Hahn has signed a contract with Marvel to play the character in other streaming and film releases.
Marvel Studios’ WandaVision is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) – two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives – begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.
WandaVision was created for Disney+ by Jac Schaeffer, who will serve as writer and executive producer on the Harkness spinoff. WandaVision earned 23 Emmy nominations at this year’s event, including one for Hahn for best-supporting actress in a limited series. Hahn’s role on the show was just one of many highlights for WandaVision. Fans embraced her nosy neighbor persona right away, then became even more enamored with her character once they discovered she was Agatha all along. It’s no surprise that Marvel is looking to give audiences more of a character they’ve grown to love, though I wonder what the plot of her spinoff will be. When last we left Agatha, Wanda had placed her under a powerful spell that trapped her inside her nosy neighbor persona. As Agnes, Agatha has no idea that she’s a potent witch from Salen, Massachusetts.
Hahn’s upcoming projects consist of the Apple series The Shrink Next Door and Knives Out 2 for director Rian Johnson. The future looks very bright for Hahn over at Marvel, though I’d hate to be Wanda once Agatha wakes up from her Pleasantville-style nightmare.
What do you think of Marvel establishing an Agatha Harkness spinoff series? Do you think the character can hold her own for an entire series, or is Marvel pulling from the wrong spellbook for this one? I have enough trust in Marvel to think that an Agatha Harkness spinoff series would be something worth conjuring, especially with Hahn’s hypnotic energy a part of the mix. Like Emperor Kuzco said in The Emperor’s New Groove before going over a waterfall, bring it on.
