New Games of Thrones prequel about Aegon’s conquest of Westeros being discussed at HBO

Even before Game of Thrones ended, HBO was already exploring options to keep the franchise going. Several potential Game of Thrones spinoffs were in development before House of the Dragon finally moved ahead, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from discussing other projects. Variety has reported that HBO is “actively” discussing a new Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.

Sources told Variety that the Aegon prequel is still in the very stages and that no writer is attached at the moment. Another source has claimed that the project may involve a feature film, meaning that we could get a movie that would lead into the events of the series. Taking place three hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones (and one hundred years before House of the Dragon), the potential prequel would tell the story of how “Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westeros with the exception of Dorne. In doing so, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty.” Incest and dragons do big business apparently.

I wouldn’t place any bets on this new Game of Thrones prequel moving ahead, but you never know. Before House of the Dragon, HBO had announced a pilot for another prequel set thousands of years before the events of the main series. Under the working title of Bloodmoon, a pilot for the potential series starring Naomi Watts was shot for somewhere between $30 million to $35 million. “The series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour,” read the official logline. “And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.” After viewing the pilot, HBO decided to scrap it and move forward with House of the Dragon instead. Production for the second season of House of the Dragon is underway, with the series expected to return in 2024.
