Slamacow! HBO Max has ordered a new Adventure Time series focusing on the characters Fionna and Cake. In the 10-episode, half-hour series, Fionna and Cake – with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov – embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. All the while, a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence lurks in the shadows.
The series, which is currently titled Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, will be showrun by Adam Muto. Muto was integral to the success of the original Adventure Time series, which is why he’ll also serve as executive producer for the new project alongside Cartoon Network Studios.
Fionna and Cake were first introduced in the third season of Adventure Time, circa 2011. They’re the adventuresome gender-swapped versions of the show’s primary protagonists, Finn the Human and Jake the Dog. Fionna and Cake made a big splash when they arrived on the Adventure Time scene and continue to be popular with fans to this day. Seriously. All you have to do is look at Cosplay photos from the past several years, and you’ll see all walks of fans dressing up like Fionna and Cake.
“’ Adventure Time’ truly broke the mold and earned legions of passionate fans in the process,” said Billy Wee, senior vice president of comedy and original animation for HBO Max. “We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the ‘Adventure Time’ universe with this world-class team.”
Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake is the latest Adventure Time project to be added to HBO Max’s roster of animated entertainment. The streamer already hosts several one-hour specials, including Adventure Time: Distant Lands, which launched in 2020. The fourth and final special, titled Wizard City, arrives in the fall.
I think that the world can always use more Adventure Time. It’s a bold, bright, and experimental series that pushes several boundaries while also tackling subjects reserved for other forms of entertainment, from gender politics to self-acceptance and more. If the new Adventure Time project is anywhere near as bold as the original series, we could be looking at another smash hit for HBO Max.
