Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong may get HBO Max streaming service release

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Warner Bros. recently announced that they'll be releasing WONDER WOMAN 1984 on the HBO Max streaming service on the same day the film reaches theatres, December 25th. Now it sounds like they're planning a similar release for their highly anticipated monster mash GODZILLA VS. KONG.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Netflix offered WarnerMedia $200 million for the streaming rights to GODZILLA VS. KONG, but WarnerMedia turned down the offer because they're figuring out a deal to release the film through their own streaming service, HBO Max. When THR contacted Warner Bros. about this, a spokesperson simply said, "We plan to release GODZILLA VS. KONG theatrically next year as scheduled." But that doesn't deny the movie will be streaming at the same time it's in theatres.

Directed by Adam Wingard from a screenplay by Mike Dougherty and Terry Rossio, GODZILLA VS. KONG has the following synopsis:

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.

The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza Gonzalez, Jessica Henwick, Julian Dennison, Demian Bichir, Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Shun Oguri, Godzilla, and Kong.

GODZILLA VS. KONG had been scheduled to reach theatres this year, but it was delayed due to the pandemic. It's currently set to be released on May 21, 2021.

I'm all for movies getting simultaneous streaming and limited theatrical releases while we wait for this pandemic to end. It worked for BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC, WONDER WOMAN 1984 is going to be huge, and it seems like the right move for GODZILLA VS. KONG as well. I have my fingers crossed that BLACK WIDOW and NO TIME TO DIE will do the same.
