Michael Mann has allegedly been in talks with his Ferrari star, Adam Driver, to portray a young McCauley for his upcoming sequel to his 1995 Los Angeles crime drama, Heat. Mann has glowed about working with Driver on Ferrari, citing his matching intense work ethic, which had them getting along like “a house on fire.” He’s said that they like each other and had a great time working with each other artistically. Driver rose to household name status thanks to his turn as the villainous Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. However, on a surface level, Driver impressively pulls his weight despite not having the “classic movie star good looks” when compared to a Brad Pitt or even a Timothée Chalamet.
According to Variety, Driver recently appeared on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? where he had to field some questions about his looks. Driver was told he doesn’t have the look of a “typical movie star” and was asked if he felt it was a hindrance to his career. The Ferrari star admits that he usually ignores superficial talk like that. “The New Yorker also called me a ‘horse face’ so I don’t — I take it with a grain of salt. I remember reading one reviewer [who wrote]: ‘His agent probably doesn’t know whether to put him in a movie or the Kentucky Derby.’ So I take it, you know, if you believe the good thing, then you have to believe the bad thing. So I try to not absorb anything.”
When inquired if it was a hindrance to his career that he wasn’t a stereotypical pretty boy, Driver stated, “I’ve worked consistently which is nice, with people that I’ve wanted to always, dreamed that I wanted to work with. So in that sense, it hasn’t — I look how I look, I can’t change that. So I guess it helped me.” Then, he added, “A hindrance in only breaking mirrors wherever I go and and having a misshapen outsized body that I can’t fit through doorways, or most clothes or fit into most cars. Apart from that, it’s good.”
Wallace continued to hammer the point by asking if he thinks it would be easier if he looked like Robert Redford, to which Driver responded, “It would just be different. Who doesn’t want to look like Robert Redford? I’ve accepted this is how I look.”
Ferrari is slated to open on December 25.
