As Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) patterns himself after Darth Vader, the former Dark Lord of the Sith who returned to the light in RETURN OF THE JEDI, audiences have been wondering whether or not we might see Kylo go through a similar redemption in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. Given Kylo Ren's evil deeds over the course of THE FORCE AWAKENS and THE LAST JEDI, which include directly and indirectly causing the deaths of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), some doubt whether a redemption is even a possibility.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Adam Driver also dismissed the idea of the redemption of Kylo Ren. "What does he have to be redeemed for?" Driver said, who sees things through the perspective of his character. "[Kylo Ren] has a different identity, a different definition of what redemption is. He’s already been redeemed in his story. I don’t think there is a thought of redemption. He doesn’t have an outside lens of the events, you know — you know what I mean? That’s more of an outsider’s view of his world." What do you think? Will Kylo Ren be redeemed in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER or will he complete his journey to the Dark Side?
Both THE FORCE AWAKENS and THE LAST JEDI have seen Kylo Ren somewhat tempted by Rey (Daisy Ridley) on multiple occasions, and THE RISE OF SKYWALKER director J.J. Abrams has said that he sees the pair as "two sides of the same coin, even when they're not together they still haunt each other in a way – they know they are each other's unresolved business." In addition to rejecting redemption for Kylo Ren, Adam Driver also isn't about to put any labels on the relationship between Rey and Kylo.
I don’t think it’s all one thing. Part of the fun of playing it is the boundaries of it keep changing. At times it’s more intimate, sometimes less intimate. Sometimes it’s codependent. And then it’s, obviously, adversarial.
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER will hit theaters on December 20th.
