According to Sean Astin, The Goonies 2 is a “100 percent mortal lock”

It feels like a sequel to THE GOONIES has been in some form of development for as long as I can remember, but according to Sean Astin (who played Mikey in the original), it's not a matter of if a sequel gets made, but rather, when it gets made. To promote his appearance at last week's Wizard World Tulsa, Astin sat down for an interview with TulsaWorld and naturally the possibility of a sequel to THE GOONIES was brought up, which he described as a "100 percent mortal lock."

I have said and will always say, that it’s not a question of if, but rather of when the sequel gets made. The precise makeup of it, I have no idea. Whether I will be in it, no idea. Whether they would even want the original cast in it, no idea. But it doesn’t matter. It’s bigger, it’s actually bigger than everybody. It’s bigger than even Steven (Spielberg), who created it. It’s bigger than Richard Donner, who breathed such strong life into it. It’s now a part of American cultural lore, and the studio has a lot to gain from promoting it, so you can take it to the bank that people will get to enjoy it more.

Some films should never receive a sequel, "but ‘Goonies’ ain’t one of them,” claimed Astin. "Goonies is pret-a-porter for a sequel, man. It is ready to wear. I thought it would be a great animated series, then you could do all kinds of stuff, unencumbered from budget issues and that stuff. But people want it. People want to see it." Astin and fellow GOONIES star Corey Feldman once even tried their hand at writing a sequel themselves saying, "we had good fun working on that together and pitched it, and we were respectfully dismissed." The last time Astin gave an update of THE GOONIES sequel it was to say that the powers that be "couldn't figure it out."

Despite Sean Astin's belief that a sequel to THE GOONIES is inevitable, I'll firmly remain in the "I'll believe it when I see it" camp for the time being. Should they just let this sequel idea die or do people really want a sequel to THE GOONIES?
