According to Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World 3 will be science thriller

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

We've seen quite a lot from JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM today, including the release of the final trailer and a handful of new images, but it's never too early to start talking about the next film in the franchise, JURASSIC WORLD 3. It was revealed last month that JURASSIC WORLD director Colin Trevorrow would be returning to direct the third outing, and Trevorrow spoke with Entertainment Weekly to give a small tease as to what sort of film we can expect.

The JURASSIC WORLD director revealed that the third film will be closer in tone to Steven Spielberg's 1993 JURASSIC PARK than either JURASSIC WORLD or JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM. "If I could contextualize each film, I would say Jurassic World was an action adventure, Fallen Kingdom is kind of a horror suspense film, and Jurassic World 3 will be a science thriller in the same way that Jurassic Park was," said Trevorrow. It's not much, but it will be interesting to see if they can pull it off. Colin Trevorrow is currently scripting JURASSIC WORLD 3 along with Emily Carmichael (PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING), and although he wouldn't spill any details, he did say that although the final film will still feature Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), there's "other characters who we’ll meet in Fallen Kingdom you’ll realize are major characters." Interesting. I was a little surprised to see Colin Trevorrow return to close out the trilogy as I'd hoped that the franchise would bring in a fresh director each time, but it was Steven Spielberg himself who requested that Trevorrow come back.

Steven Spielberg asked me [to direct], and when he asks you, what can I tell you, man? In all honesty, over my past few years, I’ve grown to love and cherish the value of the gift that I’ve been given with this franchise.

The official synopsis of JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM:

It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment.  Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.   When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.  Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission.  Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.   With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful series in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before.

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM will hit theaters on June 22, 2018, with JURASSIC WORLD 3 following on June 11, 2021.
