Academy apologizes to Sacheen Littlefeather over ’73 controversy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued a formal apology to Sacheen Littlefeather, who went down in Oscar notoriety five decades ago for refusing Marlon Brando’s The Godfather Best Actor award on his behalf.

The abuse you endured because of this statement was unwarranted and unjustified…The emotional burden you have lived through and the cost to your own career in our industry are irreparable. For too long the courage you showed has been unacknowledged. For this, we offer both our deepest apologies and our sincere admiration.”

Littlefeather, whose real name is Marie Louise Cruz, responded in tongue-in-cheek fashion: “We Indians are very patient people — it’s only been 50 years!” She added, sincerely, “It is profoundly heartening to see how much has changed.” Littlefeather, clearly putting the grudge behind her, is scheduled to appear at the newly opened Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

The incident, sparked by Brando’s disapproval of the treatment and depiction of Native Americans in Hollywood, stands as one of the most controversial in Oscar history–and one that almost had John Wayne throwing fists. Other notable controversies include Gone with the Wind winner Hattie McDaniel’s segregated seating, La La Land totally not winning Best Picture and, well, you know…

What do you think? Was the Academy’s apology golden enough?
