Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has been developing a television series centered on "the brides of Dracula" for years – we first heard about the project when it was set up at NBC in 2015. The NBC version didn't work out, but now The Brides are getting a second chance at ABC.
ABC has announced that they've given a pilot order to Aguirre-Sacasa's "sexy contemporary reimagining" of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Described as "a family drama with strong horror elements", The Brides will tell the story of
a trio of empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy — and their nontraditional family.
When the show was in the works at NBC, it was said to be about
Dracula's three vampire brides, having survived their encounter with Van Helsing centuries ago and now residing in modern day New York City.
I would assume that is still the set-up. Aguirre-Sacasa has written the pilot script. Maggie Kiley will be directing.
The Brides is coming to us from Warner Bros. Television and ABC Studios. Aguirre-Sacasa and Kiley will be executive producing the show with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions.
From the simple synopsis, this doesn't really sound like the sort of genre show I would be interested in watching, but I do think it would be cool to have a brides of Dracula series on network TV.
Aguirre-Sacasa's other genre credits include writing the screenplays for CARRIE 2013 and THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN 2014.
