ABC developing a TV sequel to NYPD Blue following Andy Sipowicz’s son

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Although you may only know Dennis Franz from the TV movie HOMER S: PORTRAIT OF AN ASS GRABBER, the actor also played the role of Andy Sipowicz for all twelve seasons of NYPD Blue. The ABC series followed the fictional 15th Precinct detective squad in Manhattan and featured an ensemble cast which also included David Caruso, Jimmy SmitsMark-Paul Gosselaar, Kim Delaney, Amy Brenneman, Garcelle Beauvais, and many more over the years. As with many TV shows of the past, it seems that NYPD Blue is set to make a return.

ABC has given a sizable pilot-production commitment to a NYPD Blue sequel which will follow Andy Sipowicz's son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield in the 15th Precinct. Much like his father, Theo is said to be a hard-drinking, hard-headed, and quick-witted cop. The twist, which will likely upset longtime fans, is that he's also investigating the murder of his father. Theo Sipowicz was born during the third season of the series to Andy Sipowicz and his wife, Assistant District Attorney Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence). Matt Olmstead and Nicholas Wootton, both of whom wrote for the original NYPD Blue, will be penning the script for the pilot. Jesse Bochco, son of NYPD Blue co-creator Steven Bochco, is also set to serve as a producer as well as direct the potential pilot. At the moment there's no deals in place for any original NYPD Blue stars to appear, but it's been said that ABC is intending on including them. As you can guess by the brief synopsis, Dennis Franz won't be appearing, but the actor told Deadline that he was approached.

I did receive a call, and I’m flattered but not interested. NYPD Blue was a high point in my life and career, and I think of it so fondly. I wish them all well and much success.

What do you think of this potential revival of NYPD Blue?
