ABC and Marvel developing a spin-off from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

With Marvel chugging along on the small screen with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. looking likely to get a third season and Agent Carter potentially coming back for a second, eyes are turned towards Netflix debuting Daredevil's first season tomorrow. But, ABC is looking to expand their offerings to a third show that would be a direct spin-off from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Entertainment Weekly revealed that the spin-off is being developed by SHIELD executive producer Jeffrey Bell (Angel, The X-Files) and SHIELD writer Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Hawaii Five-0) and could be ready to air as early as this Fall. There is no word on what the plot of the spin-off will be, just that it will not be introduced within the season like The Flash was on Arrow last year. But, according to sources, the plots developed in the final half dozen episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be the foundation for the spin-off series.

If the groundwork has already been started, that leaves some intriguing possibilities. One one had, the show could follow the new splinter faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. headed by Robert Gonzales (Edward James Olmos), but that may be too similar to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The series could also focus exclusively on the Inhumans who have played a central role since the show returned in 2015. That would also make sense in the grand scheme of things for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the upcoming Phase Three.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has improved dramatically in it's second season and still pulls in decent ratings for ABC, but there has not officially been a third season pick-up announced yet. Even if that happens, the spin-off is not guaranteed to make it to air, but there are few things that can guarantee ratings like the Marvel logo can.
