Aaron Taylor-Johnson shares some tidbits on Gareth Edwards’ use of special effects in Godzilla

GODZILLA is going to make a big appearance at the San Diego Comic Con where the first footage from Gareth Edward’s film premiered one year ago. This time, I would expect a full teaser and maybe some looks at the final monster design and hopefully a hell of a lot more. Human star of the GODZILLA remake, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, may be prepared to share more about his part in the movie next week, but he isn’t going to wait.

The KICK-ASS 2 star shared some new details about his role in GODZILLA to Total Film:

“There’s an etiquette for guys in the military, so there was training for that, how to hold guns and how to run and to talk to other officers. I love all that.”

This would hold true to rumors that he is playing a Navy lieutenant. Several of the set photos posted on Twitter by Gareth Edwards have shown military forces in the Thunder Lizard’s path of destruction. While the monster has yet to be seen outside of concept art, the set photos are also lacking very much in the way of green screen. Taylor-Johnson commented on that as well:

“I’ve hardly done any green screen stuff for it, he’s (Edwards) really clever at doing the special effects. We’ll shoot everything raw on location, on the streets, and he’s going to put it all around us.”

Interesting. I really enjoyed MONSTERS and know that Edwards will make this look good, but that also raises the question if the actors are filming against nothing or if any sort of motion capture is being employed. I like that they are going for a limited amount of CGI in the sets which will lend to a much more realistic environment. I just hope the monster and his casualties look as organic without a fully rendered environment.

GODZILLA opens everywhere on May 16, 2014.
