You know what would’ve made STEVE JOBS and THE SOCIAL NETWORK better? Tights. Or a super suit. Or an iron super suit that was tight in the crotch. Any of it, really, and if you think like me I have some good news for you, because the scribe behind those movies, Aaron Sorkin, could be flexing his superhero muscles quite soon.
While taking a moment to talk with Comic Book while at Cinema Con to promote his new movie, MOLLY'S GAME (with the amazing Jessica Chastain), Sorkin opened up about some upcoming talks he has planned with DC and Marvel, and hopes that his lack of comic book knowledge can turn into full-on fanboy syndrome…for the right character:
I happen to have meetings coming up with both DC and Marvel. I have to go into these meetings and tell them as respectfully as I can that I’ve never read a comic book. It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s just that I’ve never been exposed to one. So, I’m hoping that somewhere in their library is a comic book character that I’m gonna love and I’m going to want to go back and start reading from the first issue on.
Sorkin has yet to have these meetings, and who knows which brand he would go with, but I don’t think I’m alone in thinking this is the strangest piece of comic book news yet. Sorkin is known for writing dialogue-heavy character drama, most notably in the biopic realm. A giant blockbuster gig would not only be out of the ballpark, it would be in an Amazonian village where the villagers don’t even know what a ball is.
But, I would be into it. I’m a fan of Sorkin’s work and I think STEVE JOBS was one of 2015 best films. SOCIAL NETWORK is obviously great, and THE NEWSROOM was pretty good too. I would wanna see a comic book film from him even if just for experimental purposes. What would it even look like? I’m all for an Avengers walk-and-talk, but at some point they gotta stop walking and start punching. Can Sorkin concoct a great punching scene? Let’s roll the dice.
