Christopher Nolan is hard at work on his new movie TENET, which is due for release next summer and stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, and more. Everyone has accepted it would be some time before the first teaser would drop, but anyone off to the theater this weekend to see HOBBS & SHAW may just be in for one awesome surprise as reports have come in that the first teaser for Nolan’s movie is playing in select screenings of the action flick.

Details are obviously sparse as the trailer has not made its way online, but The Hollywood Reporter got a chance to see it at an IMAX screening of the FAST & FURIOUS spinoff. Per their description, the minute-long tease focuses solely on Washington’s character as he examines a bullet hole made through some glass. The words “Time has come for a new protagonist,” smash on screen, and as he examines further, revealing more cracks, the words “Time has come for a new kind of mission,” follow. Then there’s a series of action shots with Washington before coming to an end with an image of him with an oxygen mask on.
Not much is known about the project other than it’s an action thriller set in the world of espionage, but Nolan is no stranger to releasing vague-yet-enticing trailers for his movies, sometimes as much as a year in advance. The trailers for movies like DUNKIRK, INCEPTION and INTERSTELLAR all came out a solid year before their release, and didn’t get much into their plot and relied on mysterious visual storytelling to get people hooked.

Considering how Nolan's movies are marketed, with these small teasers coming out so far in advance we should expect to see a trailer hit the internet soon. The fact they are already showing it in select screenings is a sign they could be gearing up to drop it sooner rather than later, or this is all just a way to get people into theaters.
TENET is in theaters on July 17, 2020.
