I never saw ROCK OF AGES when it was a Broadway musical. It all seemed fairly ridiculous to me. A bunch of people pretending to be 80s fictional musicians singing non-fictional songs and doing so with the utmost sincerity (especially considering how silly some of these songs are). I think the concept of ROCK OF AGES is something you either buy into or you’re never going to be convinced. After seeing the trailer for the upcoming big-screen adaptation, I’m still in the latter.
I mean if you’ve ever wanted to hear Catherine Zeta-Jones sing Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” to a mob of teens who sing back “We Built This City on Rock and Roll” well then, this movie might just be for you. I know musicals exist in a world even more fantastical than most movies and you have to embrace any campy aspects but this just seems too much for me. Maybe because I grew up listening to this music? Maybe I’m a cranky old fart with no time for music nostalgia gussied up as a “rock musical?”
I will say this – we don’t get a lot of Tom Cruise in this trailer but what we do just continues to prove the guy brings it with every movie and at almost 50-years-old still can play a rock star oozing with charisma. The ROCK OF AGES trailer didn’t work for me at all but check out the trailer below and let me know what you think.
