The whole poker craze doesn’t seem quite the ubiquitous phenomenon it was just a couple of years ago, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last movie centered on the game/hobby/addiction.
At the recent Produced By conference, Harvey Weinstein cited ROUNDERS as an example of a film that found a considerable following on home release, and said: “I never make sequels but it’s something I’d like to revisit.” (We’ll assume he had selective amnesia about all the sequels he’s actually made at Dimension.)
Alas, a continuation of Matt Damon’s gambler and his problematic pal Ed Norton has been discussed for years, with co-writers and casino lovers David Levien and Brian Koppelman (OCEAN’S THIRTEEN) often making comments about a sequel, and hinting that everyone involved in the original (including director John Dahl) would return.
Damon himself previously speculated that he and the others would gladly play another round, stating “The actors all had a really good time working together.” But while audiences would probably ante up to see it, could the actors and filmmakers ever find time on their schedules?
Meanwhile, Weinstein has a whole bucket of other sequels and remakes he’s ready to throw at you (SPY KIDS 4, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR: THE LOST TAPES, PIRANHA 3DD, etc.)
