We're a little under a month away from the release of MILE 22, but THR reports that a sequel to the Mark Wahlberg film is already in the works. Black List writer Umair Aleem is set to write the screenplay for the MILE 22 sequel, and although it may seem a little early, the outlet claims that STX has always planned for MILE 22 to become a cross-platform franchise, spanning film, television, and VR. Plot details are obviously being kept under wraps at this point, but I'd imagine that the studio will be watching how audiences react to the first film very closely.
MILE 22 will be Mark Wahlberg's fourth time collaborating with director Peter Berg after LONE SURVIVOR, DEEPWATER HORIZON, and PATRIOTS DAY, and finds him starring as James Silva, an operative of the CIA's most highly-prized and least understood unit. Aided by a top-secret tactical command team, Silva is tasked with retrieving and transporting an asset who holds life-threatening information to Mile 22 before the enemy closes in. The upcoming action/thriller also stars Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead), Iko Uwais (THE RAID), Ronda Rousey (FURIOUS 7), and John Malkovich (DEEPWATER HORIZON) sporting a J. Jonah Jameson haircut. Getting back to MILE 22 becoming a larger franchise, one of the upcoming titles is a short-form, live-action VR project going by The Kiev Exchange. Written by Umair Aleem, The Kiev Exchange will follow the CIA’s elusive paramilitary force, Ground Branch, as they negotiate a tense and complex hostage exchange in a public square. When all hell breaks loose they must come together to fight their way out of an ambush.
MILE 22 will hit theaters on August 17, 2018.
