A sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service is in the works

While KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE may have proven to be a bit of a surprise hit, it shouldn't be a surprise for anyone that given the film's critical and commercial success (it just crossed $400 million worldwide) that a sequel is now in the works at Fox. The Wrap reports that despite no announcement by the studio or a timetable in place, a sequel to KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE will indeed to coming.

I'd imagine that Fox would like to get things moving as soon as they can before breakout star Taron Egerton finds himself too busy to return for another round of bad-ass spy antics. Director Matthew Vaughn had previously spoken about ideas for a sequel before anyone knew what a massive success KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE would turn out to be:

I'd love to do a sequel, but it's really up to the public isn't it? We've got some really bold ideas. If you think about it, this is the origin story of Eggsy. Eggsy is now the true modern gentleman spy. So there's a journey we want to put him on. I love the idea of there being none of that training crap, this is the real modern day gentleman spy going off to deal with quite the… (stops himself) Again, there's some really crazy stuff we've got planned. But I can't do it if no one goes to see it.

Vaughn also mentioned that an American branch of Kingsman could play a part in a sequel; seeing Eggsy butt heads with his American counterpart might make for some entertaining culture clash.

Now I'm about to enter spoiler territory here so those of you who have yet to see the film should be aware of that. Again, here be spoilers. Once, twice, three times a spoiler. I could go on but hopefully you get the idea.

As we know, poor Colin Firth didn't exactly make it to the finish line of KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, but what does this mean for his sequel chances? After the film opened Matthew Vaughn touched upon that very topic saying:

A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel but I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America, I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back.

People certainly bought tickets but whether Colin Firth returns remains to be seen. As much as I loved him and his character, I hope they let the sequel rest solely on Taron Egerton; in addition to Firth's possible return undermining the impact of his death I feel like Egerton has completely earned the right to be the main draw of a sequel. That said, should Colin Firth pop up for a flashback or two, I'd be more than okay with that.
