The box office is going to get another test this weekend with the release of Mortal Kombat after Godzilla Vs. Kong beat the restriction and pandemic odds by securing a solid opening weekend at the box office. Looking beyond Mortal Kombat, A Quiet Place Part II is starting to creep into prediction forecasts and, despite possibly still dealing with movie theaters running at limited capacity, the Memorial Day weekend release of the film could match the opening weekend of the first movie from 2018.
According to Box Office Pro, A Quiet Place Part II is tracking to open between the $30-50 million range domestically. If the film hits the high end of those projections, the sequel could potentially match A Quiet Place's $50.2 million start at the box office. A Quiet Place had the benefit of opening in 2018 in a pandemic and restriction-free environment. If A Quiet Place Part II can come close to the opening weekend of the original under these current conditions, it would be a truly remarkable feat.
There's still more than a month until A Quiet Place Part II is released and a lot of things can change between now and then. For instance, Los Angeles County, one of the biggest box office markets in the States, is currently running movie theaters at 50% capacity. That figure is likely to increase by Memorial Day weekend to at least 75%. California Governor Gavin Newsom has also estimated a June 15, 2021, date for a full reopening of the economy which will see businesses facing zero restrictions. A Quiet Place Part II will be a few weeks into its run when that happens but it only bodes well for its long-term prospects as well.
Great reviews will also propel the sequel's opening weekend and the film already has those in its favor. A Quiet Place Part II was near its opening when it was pulled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but press reviews were already mostly out for the film and they were VERY positive, with some saying the movie was even better than the original. Moviegoers may need to be reminded of those reviews when the film opens Memorial Day weekend but that's an easy marketing push that Paramount Pictures doesn't even have to pay for.
A Quiet Place Part II follows the deadly events of the first film and sees the Abbot family now facing the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. Directed by John Krasinski, who returns from the first film in a small role, A Quiet Place Part II also stars Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Cillian Murphy, and Djimon Hounsou.
Do YOU think A Quiet Place Part II will match the opening weekend of the first film? The sequel hits screens on May 28, 2021.
