Over forty years later, Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA still holds its own as a surprisingly effective psychedelic horror film, so it was only inevitable that the masterpiece would board the remake train. However, Luca Guadagnino (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME) considers his take on SUSPIRIA to be more of an homage than a straight up remake, saying that he immediately started to dream about making his own version of the film upon first seeing the film as a young man. "In a way it makes me smile when I hear people say, 'How dare you remake Suspiria. Typical commerce-driven mentality,'" Guadagnino said last year "I was just a boy who had seen a movie that made him what he became. So that’s how I am approaching it: a homage to the incredible, powerful emotion I felt when I saw it." The remake/homage is set to be released later this year, and Amazon Studios has unveiled a quartet of posters which tease the return of witches and magic.
Not terribly inspiring, but we will be getting the first trailer for SUSPIRIA sometime next week, which is quite exciting, especially considering the reaction audiences had to the first footage from CinemaCon. With many calling it one of the most f**ked up things they'd ever seen, the footage involves a particularly gruesome scene in which Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson) is dancing in the studio while her instructor, Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) stands nearby. Unknown to them, another woman is mirroring Susie's movements in a separate room like a voodoo doll. But as Susie dances, the other woman's body is contorted and snapped in a bone-crushing and bloody display, which reportedly made many audience members turn away from the screen.
SUSPIRIA stars Dakota Johnson (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY), Chloë Grace Moretz (THE EQUALIZER), and Tilda Swinton (DOCTOR STRANGE), with original SUSPIRIA star Jessica Harper also making an appearance as a new character. The plot will remain similar to the original, "As a darkness builds at the center of a world-renowned dance company, its artistic director (Swinton), a young American new to the troupe (Johnson), and a grieving psychotherapist (Lutz Ebersdorf) become entangled in a bloody, sighing nightmare." SUSPIRIA is set to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
