I'm fairly certain that anyone who's seen a film belonging to the MEN IN BLACK franchise has at some point fantasized about owning their own neuralizer. For those of you who're like, "a what?" A neuralizer is a fictional, pen-sized device that gives off a bright flash which erases memories. The mind-manipulating tool comes with a series of settings, allowing the user to erase moments of the past few hours, days, weeks, ect. As you can imagine, a neuralizer could be viewed as a potentially dangerous device. But what if you were HBO, and wanted to make viewers forget about last week's GAME OF THRONES coffee cup gaffe? I bet you'd have a team working overtime to obtain one, as the coffee cup oversight has been something of a drag and then some for the swords and sorcery drama.
The reason for my painting this picture is that a new promo for Sony's MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL has decided to poke a little fun on GAME OF THRONES' behalf. Uploaded to the film's official Twitter account, the teaser opens with Agent H (Chris Hemsworth) grilling an alien for info and readying his gun for fire. Then, the camera pans over to a coffee cup in the background. As the distracting beverage looms, the promo asks "GoT a mistake you want to forget?" This of course is a direct yet playful jab at the GOT coffee cup heard around the world.
You can watch the promo for yourself below:
Alongside the promo are the words "Made a mistake? We've GOT you covered." Oh snap! Did Sony just go there? I think they most certainly did. Talk about pouring salted caramel on a relatively fresh wound! After teasing HBO's record-breaking drama, Agents H and M (Tessa Thompson) use a neuralizer to make everyone forget about the conspicuous coffee cup. The teaser then ends with the agents urging viewers to go about their business, as if they'd never laid eyes on the steaming cup of distraction.
While the coffee cup incident was certainly a headache for HBO, the MIB promo doesn't strike me as cruel or unusual in any way. After all, these things happen in Hollywood a lot. It just so happens that this incident was a bit more glaring than others, given the dark and dreary setting of Winterfell's dingy dining hall.
MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL, as directed by F. Gary Gray, stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thomspon, Rebecca Furguson, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani, and Rafe Spall. In the franchise's new adventure, the MIB will tackle their biggest threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization.
MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL will beam into theaters on June 14, 2019.
