Hollywood has been trying to jumpstart the MACGYVER brand for years. The original series, starring Richard Dean Anderson, ran from 1985 to 1992, and maintains a legacy of a hero who was always able to get himself out of troublesome situations by using whatever items were nearby to concoct a flawless escape. It’s apparently been missed a great deal, because not only is CBS bringing forth a pilot to try to launch a new MACGYVER, Lionsgate is continuing with development in the hopes of making a big-screen MACGYVER movie.
How much MACGYVER do we really need at any one given time?
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer revealed the MACGYVER movie plans vaguely on an earnings conference call earlier today, as Neal Moritz and the original series creator Lee David Zlotoff and Neal Moritz producing. No further details were made available, although it’s hard to know how serious Lionsgate is about this project given that someone has seemingly been working on making a MACGYVER movie happen dating all the way back to 2002. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen. It just means it hasn’t happened so far, so there’s no real history to state that this would be the one that might work.
Then again, we are big into shared universes now, so perhaps a MACGYVER multi-verse across television and the movies? Come on… you know you’d watch… Okay, who am I kidding? That’s a horrible idea. Back to the drawing board…
