Writer/director Babak Anvari caught a lot of positive attention with his feature directorial debut UNDER THE SHADOW, a supernatural horror film that was set in 1980s Tehran, during the Iran–Iraq War. A few years have passed and now Anvari is back with his first English language feature, WOUNDS… which sort of looks like a play on Japanese horror, and hasn't been receiving the sort of rave reviews that UNDER THE SHADOW enjoyed.
Our own Chris Bumbray gave UNDER THE SHADOW a 9/10 review, but WOUNDS got a 5/10 from him.
Based on Nathan Ballingrud's novella The Visible Filth, WOUNDS stars Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, and Zazie Beetz. The film tells the following story:
A New Orleans bartender's life starts to unravel as a series of disturbing and inexplicable events happen after he picks up a phone left behind at his bar.
WOUNDS will be released through the Hulu streaming service on October 18th. In anticipation of that release, a trailer has arrived online and can be seen below.
I don't have high hopes for this one, but I will be watching it.
