In just over a month, Netflix will be releasing the Adam Wingard film DEATH NOTE on their streaming service, but while we wait for the full feature the company has released a clip from the film that can be seen below.
Long in development (at one point Shane Black was attached to direct), this live action DEATH NOTE is an adaptation of a manga series that has already inspired novels, animes, video games, and multiple live action films in Japan. The story centers on
a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone's name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.
Wingard's version of the tale stars Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Paul Nakauchi, Shea Wigham, Lakeith Stanfield, and Willem Dafoe.
The clip shows one of the scenes in which the lead character writes a name down in the book, urged to do so by a hulking demonic character called Ryuk. Dafoe provides the voice of the supernatural creature. Judging by this scene, Ryuk will be a reason to watch the movie even if you're not interested in any other aspect of it.
Check out the two and half minute clip and decide if you're going to be watching DEATH NOTE on Netflix August 25th.
